iPad 3: What We Know So Far Watch for a beefier processor, sleeker display, and perhaps a smaller sibling -- but when?

As 2011 winds down, speculation about the iPad 3 is ramping up. Although it's too early to paint a clear picture of Apple's next iPad, unconfirmed reports give us a sense of what to expect. Here's what we think we know so far about the iPad 3:
A6 Processor
Apple has debuted new processors in both of the last two iPads, so it's safe to assume that the iPad 3 will also get a new chip, probably dubbed the A6. But whether the A6 is a dual-core processor like this year's A5, or a quad-core processor, remains uncertain. A report in Korea Times suggests that Apple will go quad-core for the iPad 3, but Linley Gwennap, principle analyst for the Linley Group, thinks the A6 will be a more power-efficient dual-core processor.
Editor's Note: Image of concept iPad (above right) is from Mac|Life magazine. The illustrator is Adam Benton. He created the image for a feature in Mac|Life's annual "Fauxtotypes" feature. This image was featured in the January 2011 issue of Mac|Life, as well as online.
Retina Display
The other big iPad 3 feature that Apple watchers are hoping for is a "Retina" display, doubling the current iPad's resolution to 2048-by-1536. Citi analyst Richard Gardner is betting on a Retina display iPad 3 early next year, and DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim, who at one point was a Retina display naysayer for the iPad 3, told CNet that production has begun.
Design Changes
Not much is known about what the iPad 3 will look like, but Japanese blog Makotakara has cited unnamed sources in saying the next iPad will be thicker than its predecessor, possibly to accommodate the updated display. The site has also reported that the iPad 3 will have a smaller dock connector. Meanwhile, parts reseller TVC-Mall is now selling microphone cable replacement ribbons for the iPad 3, with a different design than earlier iPads, suggesting a "major redesign" according to Cydia Blog.
iPad Mini
Reports around the Web are saying that Apple is planning a smaller iPad in addition to the iPad 3, with a 7.85-inch display. DisplaySearch's Shim said Apple is showing interest in a smaller tablet, possibly for a late 2012 release. DigiTimes, citing "sources in the supply chain," also says a 7.85-inch iPad could arrive before the fourth quarter of 2012. The idea is to compete with smaller, cheaper tablets like Amazon's Kindle Fire.
Release Date
As with the iPhone 4S, release date predictions for the iPad 3 have been all over the place. DigiTimes says it's scheduled to launch at the end of the first quarter (March), while Citi's Richard Gardner thinks it'll launch in February. Linley Gwennap, however, thinks the A6 processor could hold Apple back, resulting in a June 2012 release for the iPad 3.

LED TV

In recent years, the digital television market enlivened by the presence of a flat-screen television technology by some of the leading electronic vendor called LED TVs. Vendor of the most aggressive in TV poured with this new technology include: Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Toshiba, and many other leading vendors.

Basically the LED TV is actually a development of this type of LCD TV which uses LED backlight instead of fluorescent light that is used on the type of LCD TV before. There are two kinds of LED TVs on the market: RGB LED with an LED that is placed behind the display panel, or EDGE-LEDs where the LEDs placed around the screen [5].

Advantages of LED TVs

Levels are much higher contrast than LCD TVs, equivalent or even higher than Plasma TVs
Allow manufacturers to produce flat-screen television the size of super-thin, with a thickness of about 2.5 cm
     More environmentally friendly
Lower electricity consumption of about 20-30% compared to conventional LCD TVs
Various products from well known vendors LED TV offers digital image processing features, features Digital TV Tuner, and various other new features.

Weakness LED TV

Prices are slightly more expensive, for the same size and features, LED TVs are the cheapest prices around 20% more expensive than conventional LCD TVs

LCD TV

LCD TVs on the market which appear first of Plasma experienced a decline in popularity since the emergence of Plasma TVs offered by considering the various advantages compared to earlier generation LCDs. With a price that is much more expensive for smaller size, making Plasma sales increased.

However, on further developments, LCD TV with economical price with a variety of technical progress, making consumers switch back to LCD TVs. Along with the emergence of HDTV and Full HD TV LCD TV product line, followed by a large size, the price of LCD TVs was also increasingly makes sense in the pockets of consumers.

Basically, LCD TVs work by producing images of black and colored by the selection of light emitted by a series of lamp technologies CCFLs (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps) behind the scenes. Millions of lights will be switched on and off through the LCD shutter by passing white light with a certain intensity. Each shutter will be combined with color filters will miss the colors Red, Green, and Blue (RGB). Shutter and Filter, each of which is a sub-pixel size is very small, and by naked eye to form a joint called pixels [3].

Excellence LCD TV

     Reproduce colors more realistic
     Anti-glare technology (without shadows)
Available from small to large sizes
     No radiation is emitted
Can be used as a computer monitor
Resource requirements of lower power than Plasma

Weakness of the LCD TV

The image quality will decline when seen at a wide angle of view
For large size, more expensive when compared to Plasma TVs
Refresh Rate and Response Time, which is much lower than plasma, so that sometimes produces a blurred image

PLASMA TV

Plasma Display Panel (PDP) or in Indonesia known as the Plasma TV is one type of flat screen TV technology that enables manufacturers to produce large size flat screen TVs in bulk with an economical price.

The term and concept of the technology itself Plasma TVs introduced in 1936 by an expert in Physics, Electronics, and inventor of Hungary [1]. In the development of IBM, Fujitsu, and Panasonic introduced several types of plasma televisions that utilize technology in their research. New in 1997, followed by Philips and Pioneer Fujitsu, released flat-screen TVs with 42 inch size Plasma technology is commercially [2].

The term itself comes from the use of PDP Plasma cells, which is a fluorescent lamp, as the basis for the television screen lighting. A Plasma TVs use millions of Plasma cells are placed between two glass display panels. Each cell contains a combination of noble gases and small amounts of mercury that will be evaporated and given the power to glow and form a plasma. The color produced from phosphorus contained in the cell, where in each cell would contain phosphorus are 3 types of primary colors, namely: Red, Green, and Blue, or commonly known as RGB. The difference voltage assigned to each cell also produce color combinations that exist.

Advantages of Plasma TV

Produces a better black than LCD TVs
     Contrast ratio is high (1:2.000.000)
     Much more broad viewpoint
Refresh Rate and Response Time is fast, minimizing image blur

Weaknesses Plasma TVs

Still images are displayed in a long time will cause burn-in and image ghosting
The image quality will continue to decline with duration of use, albeit in a relatively long period of time
     Heavier than LCDs
Using an electric power larger than the LCD TV
Sizes are generally not available below 42 inches.
